Understanding Root Canal Treatment

Saving Teeth, One Root at a Time

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on treating the inside of the tooth — specifically, the pulp and the nerves housed within the root canals. When a tooth becomes deeply decayed, cracked, or infected, the pulp inside can become inflamed or die, causing severe pain, sensitivity, and swelling. Root canal treatment (RCT) is the procedure used to carefully remove the infected tissue, disinfect the canals, and seal the tooth — preserving your natural tooth rather than extracting it.

At Twin City Dental, our endodontic treatments are performed using modern rotary instrumentation, precision magnification, and updated protocols — all under local anesthesia to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as getting a routine filling. Contrary to the myths, a modern root canal is a pain-relieving procedure, not a pain-causing one.

Our Endodontic Services

Comprehensive Root Canal Care for Every Case

Single-Root RCT

Root canal treatment for front teeth (incisors and canines) that have a single root canal. A quicker, straightforward procedure ideal for treating decay or trauma-related pulp damage in the anterior teeth.

Multi-Root RCT

Specialized treatment for premolars and molars, which typically have two to four canals. Our team uses advanced rotary endodontic systems to ensure every canal is thoroughly cleaned, shaped, and sealed for long-term success.

Re-RCT (Root Canal Retreatment)

A previously treated tooth that has developed new infection or pain can often be saved through retreatment. We carefully remove the old filling material, re-clean the canals, and reseal the tooth — giving your natural tooth a second chance before considering extraction.

Post & Core

For severely damaged teeth where too little natural structure remains, we place a post inside the treated root canal and build up a "core" to support a future crown — restoring both function and strength before the final restoration.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Many patients delay root canal treatment because they hope the pain will go away on its own — but ignoring the early signs often leads to bigger problems, including tooth loss. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s time to book a consultation:

  • Persistent tooth pain that lingers even when you’re not eating or drinking
  • Sharp sensitivity to hot or cold that continues for more than a few seconds after the stimulus is removed
  • Pain while chewing or biting down on a specific tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums around a particular tooth
  • Darkening or discoloration of a single tooth compared to the others
  • A recurring pimple-like bump on the gums near the tooth (often a drainage sinus from infection)
  • Cracked or chipped teeth that expose the inner pulp

What to Expect

Your Root Canal, Step by Step

We believe informed patients are comfortable patients. Here’s exactly what happens when you come in for a root canal at Twin City Dental:

STEP01

Consultation & Diagnosis

We begin with a thorough clinical exam and an IOPA (Intra-Oral Periapical) X-ray to assess the extent of infection and confirm whether a root canal is the right treatment.

STEP02

Local Anesthesia

The area around the affected tooth is numbed completely, so you won't feel any pain during the procedure — just some gentle pressure.

STEP03

Accessing & Cleaning the Canals

A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth, and the infected pulp is carefully removed. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and disinfected using rotary endodontic files.

STEP04

Sealing the Tooth

Once the canals are fully disinfected, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent reinfection.

STEP05

Final Restoration

Most root canal-treated teeth require a crown (or a post & core followed by a crown) for long-term protection. We'll guide you through the restoration options best suited to your tooth and budget.

Note: Most single-root RCTs can be completed in one visit, while multi-root cases may require two to three visits depending on the complexity.

Common Questions

Root Canal FAQs

Is a root canal really painful?
This is the biggest myth in dentistry. A modern root canal is performed under local anesthesia and is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. In fact, the procedure relieves the pain caused by the infected pulp — most patients report immediate relief afterwards.
How long does a root canal take?
A single-root RCT typically takes 45–60 minutes and can often be completed in one visit. Multi-root cases (molars) may require two to three appointments of about an hour each, depending on the complexity.
Can I eat after a root canal?
Yes, but we recommend avoiding hot foods and chewing on the treated side until the numbness wears off (usually 2–4 hours). Stick to soft foods for the first day, and avoid biting directly on the treated tooth until a final crown is placed.
Do I really need a crown after a root canal?
In most cases, yes — especially for back teeth (premolars and molars) that bear the brunt of chewing forces. A crown protects the treated tooth from cracking and significantly extends its lifespan. We'll advise you based on the specific tooth involved.
How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?
With proper care and a well-fitting crown, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime. Good oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and avoiding habits like chewing ice or hard candy all help ensure long-term success.
What if my old root canal is hurting again?
It's uncommon but it does happen — occasionally, a previously treated tooth can develop a new infection. The good news is that retreatment (Re-RCT) is often successful and can save the tooth without the need for extraction. Book a consultation and we'll assess whether retreatment is the right option for you.
